ABOUT
LITERASI ANAK BANUA

Literasi Anak Banua is an Youth-Led (NGO Transition) that focuses on changing the status quo of Indigenous Communities in South Kalimantan through an educational approach.

Literasi Anak Banua was founded in 2018, initially established to address illiteracy among elementary school students in the most disadvantaged, frontier, and Outermost rural areas of South Kalimantan, with a focus on Indigenous children. It started because our initiator found that many elementary students in 3rd-grade classes couldn't read at all, and it's rooted in a curriculum that doesn't fit Indigenous children, poor-quality human resources, and inaccessible education facilities. These conditions also led to more fragility in rural areas, where some of the elderly had been fooled into signing a letter of surrender on their ancestral land to private companies because they couldn't read

Initially founded under the name “Rumah Baca Kami”, it was initiated to reduce the quality gap in the most remote areas and for Indigenous Peoples. Now, Literasi Anak Banua has an impact on 40 remote villages across 5 districts in South Kalimantan. Involving 72 volunteers, 24 permanent members, and 18 digital teams with various activities, from providing free tutoring based on teaching with a diverse curriculum from literacy and numeracy to climate education, and building a mini library. Literasi Anak Banua also grows to empower Indigenous youth to be changemakers across diverse projects, from downstream to upstream.

Through the success of Literasi Anak Banua, the organization has received various recognitions, including being named 1 of 100 youth-led projects with the best social projects in the world by the UN & For Leadership in 2022, and being named one of the Top 20 Best Projects in ASEAN by the EU-ASEAN 2024.
